Making the Most of an Ultrawide Monitor

28 Jun 2026·2 min read·Guides

An ultrawide monitor gives you an enormous canvas. Without a plan, most of that canvas disappears behind a single maximized window, which is a bit like buying a six-lane highway and driving down the middle of it.

Why ultrawides need a strategy

On a normal display, maximizing a window is fine. On an ultrawide, it stretches a single app across space it was never designed to fill, leaving text uncomfortably wide and everything else out of reach. The screen is big enough to hold your whole workflow at once, but only if you divide it deliberately.

Think in columns, not windows

The most productive ultrawide setups treat the screen as a set of columns: a communication column, a main work column, and a reference column, for example. PinLayout builds these column-based zones for you and drops each app into the one that fits.

An ultrawide is not one big screen. It is several focused screens that happen to share a frame.

Save your best setups as snapshots

Once you find an arrangement that works, you should never have to rebuild it. Capture it as a zone snapshot and restore the entire layout in one action the next time you sit down, or when you switch tasks.

  • Split the width into purposeful columns instead of maximizing.
  • Give your primary task the center, with support material flanking it.
  • Keep a comfortable reading width so wide windows stay legible.
  • Save distinct snapshots for coding, meetings, and research.

Ultrawides reward a little structure with a lot of room to think. Let PinLayout handle the structure and the extra pixels finally start paying off.
